Have extraterrestrials ever made contact with Earth? If so, does the government know about it? These are questions that have fueled endless speculation for decades, and we might soon have some answers.

Congress made its move

When considering the latest version of the National Defense Authorization Act, lawmakers included a passage that compels the federal government to share all reports related to unidentified flying objects with the National Archives.

This won’t immediately make them available to the general public, but it is the first step in that process.

In its own statement regarding the new legislative measure, the National Archives explained that, by a deadline of Oct. 20, all federal agencies must “review, identify, and organize each Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) record in its custody for disclosure to the public and transmission to the National Archives.”

A wide range of documents

As for which reports are subject to the new order, the NDAA provided a fairly robust set of parameters.

“Government, Government-provided, or Government-funded records related to unidentified anomalous phenomena, technologies of unknown origin, and non-human intelligence (or equivalent subjects by any other name with the specific and sole exclusion of temporary non-attributed objects)” are now subject to release.

Furthermore, federal entities are required to provide additional details including, among other things, when the documents were created, the agency responsible for creating them, and the level of security classification they received.

It remains to be seen whether Agent Fox Mulder’s famous proclamation that “the truth is out there” will ever be fully realized by the American people. But this new requirement is a significant step toward either putting a host of conspiracy theories to rest while possibly sparking many new ones.
