Good things come in small packages, or so the adage goes. And SpaceX founder Elon Musk says the latest addition to the company’s Starlink internet service will prove the maxim correct.

Backpacker’s delight?

Starlink has already made impressive strides in expanding internet connectivity around the globe — from remote villages in the Amazon to travelers aboard planes and boats.

But Starlink Mini could revolutionize the service by putting it in a smaller and simpler package that can be taken virtually anywhere on Earth. So far, we’re being told that the device uses less power than previously thought while still producing internet speed higher than 100 mbps.

And Musk celebrated the milestone with a social media post touting that setting it up took less than five minutes, adding: “This product will change the world.”

As for the device itself, the Starlink Mini dish is roughly the size of a laptop computer, uses DC power, and includes a built-in router. That portability could make it a go-to solution for backpackers worldwide.

How you can get it

U.S. customers who already have a residential plan can add the Mini kit for under $600. That’s a bit more than the larger dish (and requires an additional $30 monthly cost) … but for many frequent travelers, the portability might easily justify that added expense.

Starlink Mini includes 50 gb of data each month, and more can be purchased as needed.

While this is a new service in the U.S. and will initially only be available through one plan, it’s been offered elsewhere for a while — and those nations could signal how Starlink Mini might evolve in the States.

“Our goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable,” the company explained.
