It took a while for the public to get used to seeing them on the street, but the divisive Tesla Cybertruck is now officially at the top of the EV truck heap.

A rocky start

The Cybertuck was announced years ago to significant fanfare, but production delays, price increases, and reliability concerns dampened the impact of its eventual release. And that doesn’t even factor in the way it looks.

But the undeniable novelty factor surrounding the Cybertruck when it first launched has been replaced by evidence of fairly widespread appeal. In this increasingly competitive automotive sector, Tesla not only led the pack but sold nearly as many Cybertrucks in July as all the other EV trucks from other automakers combined.

Based on vehicle registration information, Tesla sold 5,175 Cybertrucks that month. That’s just a few hundred shy of the total of all the other EV trucks sold that month.

Increased competition

Just within the electric truck segment, the Cybertruck has four direct competitors:

  • Ford F-150 Lighting
  • Rivian R1T
  • Chevrolet Silverado EV
  • Hummer EV

And Tesla, which was clearly at the forefront of the EV revolution, is now facing serious threats from other companies. But it seems to be maintaining its spot at the front of the pack.

Although the company’s 48% share of EV registrations in July was slightly lower than where it was the same month last year, it’s still a strong showing given how many new models have been introduced lately.

The somewhat surprising mainstream success of the Cybertruck appears to be positive news for Tesla … unless it’s too much of a good thing. The company says it currently has a backlog of about 2 million pre-orders.

We’ll know more about Tesla’s trends when its third-quarter deliveries report drops next month.
